When I was still a boy at home with my parents and my brothers and sisters, we enjoyed celebrating all the holydays, holidays, birthdays, First Holy Communions, Confirmations, anniversaries and various special occasions. These days gave us a chance to stop and look at the many blessings received and to appreciate all that had been given us. Through our remembrance of the past we could see its relevance and importance here and now in the present. We also learned to treasure the people in our lives, not to take them for granted. On Memorial Day let us not forget those who have served our country, especially those who have given their lives for our freedoms. They made the supreme sacrifice that our nation might live.

“If Victory comes it will be brought by Mary” - Saint John Paul II. - “’Be not afraid’ Christ said to his apostles (cf. Luke 24:36) and to the women (cf. Matthew 28:10) after the Resurrection. According to the Gospels, these words were not addressed to Mary. Strong in her faith, she had no fear. Mary’s participation in the victory of Christ became clear to me above all from the experience of my people. ........
On May 4 and 5, we celebrated with 33 of our young parishioners, who received communion for the first time. The students and their families will gather and attend the 9:30 Mass this weekend, then share stories at a special breakfast. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to grow in faith. Pray, also, for their parents and families, who support and guide them on their journey.

May is indeed the Month of Our Lady, which in no way detracts from our celebration of the Easter season. In fact, quite the opposite. In the Directory on Popular Piety and Liturgy, published by the Vatican in December of 2001 we read in paragraph 191: “since the month of May largely corresponds with the fifty days of Easter, the pious exercises practiced at this time could emphasize Our Lady’s participation in the Paschal mystery (cf. John 19, 25-27), and the Pentecost event (cf. Acts 1, 14)

On Holy Thursday we commemorated the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted for all time the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders. Our faith tells us that the Last Supper and Good Friday are integrally linked for all time. At every Mass we are invited to really participate in His love that we may take up our cross and follow Him. The Holy Mass is for those who wish to be saints, heroes and heroines, in our day and age.
