Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Many have read or heard news that Pope Francis is “banning the Latin Mass.” That is not true. First, let me make clear that there are actually two ways to celebrate Mass in Latin. There is the rite of Mass as it was before Vatican II, which was exclusively celebrated in Latin, AND there is the rite of Mass after Vatican II that is usually celebrated in the vernacular but may always be celebrated in Latin without any restrictions. In fact, the official Vatican II document on the restoration of the liturgy states that Latin is to be retained and may always be used, of course, giving permission for the vernacular. Therefore, the use of Latin is not banned.
The pope has not only not banned Latin, nor has he banned the Roman Missal used before Vatican II. But what is the change we are hearing about? The last document regulating the use of the traditional Latin Mass (Summorum Pontificum) came out under Pope Benedict XVI, is now replaced with a new document called Traditionis Custodes. The new document has new regulations on the matter, but definitely does not ban the Traditional Latin Mass. One of the major differences is that the local bishop decides matters, whereas before every priest could decide on his own.
The Traditional Latin Mass at IHM has always been celebrated with the approval and encouragement of Archbishop Cordileone. He continues to support and encourage us in the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass after the new document. On July 16 Archbishop Cordileone said: “The Mass is a miracle in any form. Christ comes to us in the flesh under the appearance of Bread and Wine. Unity under Christ is what matters. Therefore, the Traditional Latin Mass will continue to be available here in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and provided in response to the legitimate needs and desires of the faithful.”
I continue to count on your loving reception of all those from our parish and outside of the parish who come to the Traditional Latin Mass, just as you do at all the Masses celebrated here. I offer my personal warm welcome to all.
Yours in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Fr. Mark G. Mazza, Pastor
