Pope Boniface VIII established the first Christian Jubilee in 1300.
In the Catholic Church, a Jubilee, or Holy Year, is a special year of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope. It's a time to renew one's commitment to God and to serve others.
The Jubilee Year is a time to repent of sins, forgive others, and renew one's spiritual life.
It's also a time to come back into right relationship with God, with one another, and with all of creation.
In the Catholic Church, hope is a theological virtue that means desiring eternal life and the Kingdom of Heaven. It's a gift from God that comes from trusting in Christ's promises and relying on the Holy Spirit's grace.
PILGRIM; In the Catholic faith, a pilgrim is someone who journeys to a sacred place for spiritual renewal and to encounter God. Pilgrimages can be physical journeys, or they can represent a person's spiritual journey.
HOPE; The Theological Virtue of Hope is perhaps the most difficult of the three theological virtues to understand. It can be described as an unshakable trust and assurance that the promises of God will be fulfilled.
This trust is based on what He has done for us in His Son Jesus, through His Death and Resurrection. Like faith, it is not a human attitude or opinion, but it is a gift of the Holy Spirit.
The CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH describes the true nature and meaning of the virtue.
The 2025 Jubilee is centered on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” As His Holiness Pope Francis so beautifully expressed it: "We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision.
“Pilgrims of Hope” is the theme for the 2025 Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church. It's a call to action to spread hope and trust in God during a time of global challenges.
