Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Humility is a virtue hard to grasp and even harder to obtain. One old bishop used to say to his seminarians that humility is the most difficult virtue, since if anyone celebrates and proclaims his humility then he is not humble. Yet we know it when we see it.
Humility comes from being docile before God in all things. A humble soul knows that God is the Creator and Master, and we are His servants. We are humble when we submit to God’s Word and Will in a compliant way. Indeed, God knows best and little by little reveals to us His unconditional love. Sometimes when things do not go the way we think they ought to we are tempted to become angry with God and maybe even lapse into bitterness. A soul can become quite hardened toward God and even reflect this to others. Instead of moving on, trusting God’s will, we can let circumstances stifle and even harden our inner life in our heart of hearts.
Humility frees us. We move toward peacefulness. In time we experience healing and love. When we surrender to God doors and windows might open in ways we had not expected or imagined. Love begins to triumph in us and toward others. All in time. We even become surprised with joy. In the end God will not let us down.
Each day we consecrate ourselves to the Lord in His Most Sacred Heart. We respond: “Ecce ego Domine, quia vocasti me! Ecce venio ut faciam voluntatem tuam. Here I am Lord, because you have called me! Behold, I come to do your will.”
Yours in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Fr. Mark G. Mazza, Pastor
